SUMMARY:Cancelled - Carnaval: The Music of Brazil Streaming Show
DESCRIPTION:TDAC’s 6 Beats Apart Series presents Carnaval: The Music of Brazil – Streaming Show with the Paul & Laura Landsberg Quintet has been cancelled to increased COVID-19 cases. \nFeel the heat in winter with the sounds of South America as The Paul and Laura Landsberg Quintet perform an evening of the colorful and energetic music of Brazil. These festive rhythms will include bossa nova\, samba\, choro\, and contemporary Brazilian music arranged by this stellar quintet. Featuring vocalist Laura Landsberg singing in Portuguese and English\, Paul Landsberg on traditional nylon acoustic guitar\, Juno award winning guitarist Mike Rud\, virtuoso bassist Rob Fahie\, and local favorite Steven Parish on drums and percussion. This May evening show will be a bright and sunny carnival full of songs and positivity. \nPerformer bios \nPaul Landsberg was born in the Bronx\, and grew up across the Hudson River in New Jersey\, a half hour’s drive from New York City. At Western Washington University in Bellingham\, Landsberg began his formal music training and after one year moved onto the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. He took a 12-month hiatus from post-secondary to travel with a top-40 cover band that played five sets a night in hotels in the eastern United States\, and by his early-30s\, when he moved to Nelson\, the in-demand freelance guitarist had already spent two decades playing and performing. Added to the mix was eight years teaching at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. An original faculty member at Selkirk College\, Paul Landsberg retired in 2017 after a 28-year career. Landsberg helped start and design the program for students interested in pursuing a life in the industry\, and mentored thousands of students over his 28 years at Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus\, all the time continuing to gig with various bands. \nLaura Landsberg was born in London\, England\, raised in Vancouver\, and now lives in Nelson. Laura received her formal education at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton\, Alberta and has studied with Bobby McFerrin\, Rhiannon\, David Worm\, Axel Thiemer (Voice Care Network)\, Dee Daniels\, Kiran Ahluwalia\, Joey Blake and many other inspiring teachers. She has taught music since 1985 and joined the Selkirk College Music faculty in the fall of 2004. She is a certified voice care teacher and a member of the “Voice Care Network”. Laura has been the featured soloist with the Universal Gospel Choir\, the Spokane Jazz Orchestra and the Vancouver Ensemble for Jazz Improvisation (VEJI)\, and has played with Hugh Fraser\, Donnie Clark\, Chris Brubeck\, and Ian McDougall. She’s been performing her unique blend of jazz\, blues and gospel music throughout North America for over 20 years. Described as “…a remarkably fresh and unpretentious singer\,” by the Spokesman Review\, perhaps Paul Grant of CBC Radio’s Hot Air put it best when he stated\, “with so many singers trying to sound like someone else\, it’s a treat to hear Laura Landsberg’s fresh and original voice. She’s a natural.” \nRob Fahie was originally from Ottawa\, and attended McGill University\, completing his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance. He then received a full scholarship to the University of Colorado to study a dual-concentration Master of Music degree (jazz and classical). During his career\, he has performed at prestigious jazz clubs and premiere concert halls throughout the world including The Blue Note and Carnegie Hall. In 2013\, Rob moved to Nelson and has succeeded in making a name for himself on the region’s vibrant music scene. \nSteven Parish earned his BA in Audio Engineering from the Berklee College of Music. In addition to studying Drum Set at Berklee\, he also studied jazz drum set privately with Frankie Dunlop (Thelonious Monk\, Lionel Hampton)\, Latin rhythms with Frank Malabe and attended master classes presented by the great Buddy Rich. Mentored by the legendary Les Paul at age 17\, Steven’s also played\, engineered and/or programmed tracks for Rock ‘n’ Roll legend Cub Koda\, Ian Hunter\, Joe Bouchard of Blue Öyster Cult and Rap artist Stezo-E. He has played Jazz with Anthony Braxton and Pat LaBarbara\, as well as performance art with the groundbreaking Fluxus. He has performed with Selkirk’s long list of visiting artists including Pat Mastellotto and Oz Noy\, among others.Steven Parish started the Music Program at Selkirk College with Darcy Hepner\, Jeff Link and Paul Landsberg in 1989. \nMike Rud is a Juno award-winning jazz guitarist and songwriter. As an instrumentalist\, Mike has played alongside some of the greatest jazz musicians of the era like Peter Bernstein\, Kenny Wheeler\, Herb Ellis and Joey DeFrancesco. As a songwriter and arranger\, Mike won the 2014 Juno Award for his album Notes on Montreal\, a critically acclaimed musical portrait of the city. It was inspired by the great literature set in Montreal (Michel Tremblay\, Gabrielle Roy etc.) and sung by Sienna Dahlen. Mike’s subsequent 2015 solo release\, Miniatures\, delighted audiences across Canada\, creating the effect of a small group with only his voice and his guitar. Rud has a master’s degree from McGill and studied privately in New York City with one of the fathers of modern jazz guitar\, Jim Hall. in 2007 Mike spent a year studying how the brain processes music\, in the laboratory of Dr. Daniel Levitin (author of New York Times bestseller This is Your Brain on Music). Mike has taught at McGill\, Western Washington and Carleton universities\, and speaks frequently at other music schools. He is also a music instructor at Selkirk College in Nelson\, BC. \nOur Six Beats Apart Series is sponsored by Kootenay Savings Credit Union\, Century 21\, McEwan Law\, Trail Beer Refinery and Teck Metals Ltd. Our programming is made possible thanks to funding from the Government of British Columbia\, BC Arts Council\, BC Touring Council\, Canadian Heritage\, and the Vancouver Foundation.
