SUMMARY:The Fugitives headline with openers Rumour Mill at Kootenay Savings Music in the Park
DESCRIPTION:The perfect pairing of indie-folk duo “Rumour Mill” followed by Brendan McLeod’s modern folk quartet “The Fugitives”. \nOpening the evening is “Rumour Mill“\, an indie-folk duo headed by multi-instrumentalists\, Anna Katarina and Aline Daigle\, currently residing in beautiful Nelson\, BC. Imagine the sounds of Fleetwood Mac\, Brandi Carlile and First Aid Kit melding with a lush topography of violin\, harmonies\, keys\, guitar and mandolin. \nTheir debut EP\, “Daylight’s Free”\, released in April 2019\, quickly earned respect and attention on the international stage – charting in the top 100 in US College Radio\, leading to a nomination for Artist of the Year at the 2019 Kootenay Music Awards\, Top 100 in CBC Searchlight\, and a full scholarship to the 2020 International Folk Alliance Conference in New Orleans\, LA. \nIn September 2020\, they released “Gone With The Wine”. The self-produced EP sees the duo mature in their sound\, ringing with a touch of a broken heartedness\, and pivoting slightly from their more happy-go-lucky debut.\nWith melancholic melodies\, soulful harmonies and lyrics that weave the listener through an exploration of timeless themes\, these ladies will sweep you off your feet and leave you wanting more! \nHeadlining at 7pm are “The Fugitives“\, a dynamic modern folk quartet\, with 4-part harmony and a variety of instruments (guitar\, bass\, kick-drum\, banjo\, violin\, balalaika and harmonica). They jump from foot-stomping sing-alongs to show-stopping a capella ballads to insightful political and storytelling songs. \nA folk collective headed by songwriters Adrian Glynn and Brendan McLeod\, the band has toured extensively through Canada\, Western Europe\, and the UK. They’re joined by banjo player Chris Suen (Viper Central) and violinist Carly Frey (The Coal Porters). Over the past twelve years\, they’ve earned a reputation for unforgettable live shows\, brimming with complex harmonies\, infectious storytelling and top-notch musicianship. \nTheir most recent album\, “The Promise of Strangers” was nominated for Canadian Folk and Western Canadian Music Awards and won Best Folk Album of 2019 from the German Music Critic’s Association. Their previous album\, “Everything Will Happen”\, spent ten weeks on the top ten Canadian folk charts\, and earned them a support slot across Western Canada with Buffy Sainte-Marie and an appearance at UK’s Glastonbury Festival. Performance highlights include major folk festivals across Canada\, headlining slots in overseas americana festivals\, and a 2019 sold-out run across Germany. \n“Despite their all-acoustic lineup\, the Fugitives bring enough energy to the stage to light up a small city… a sound that’s like the missing link between Leonard Cohen and the Pogues.”— Georgia Straight \nMusic in the Park is held at Trail’s Gyro Park every Thursday starting at 6.15 pm\, except for the Night Market shows on July 7 and August 4 when the event will run from 5 pm. The creative partnership of Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet has a signature sound – guitar-heavy\, harmony-abundant\, and lyrically deft. The JUNO Award winners have been busy in the last two years releasing two full length albums in 2021 with “Strike Me Down”\, a collection of disco-twirling\, hard riffing tales from the brink following hot on the heels of “Modern Love”. Strike Me Down showcases Whitehorse’s masterful\, fantastical storytelling and melodic pop sensibilities\, with plenty of space made for guitar shredding\, epic basslines\, and spaced-out vocal layering. \n2022 sees Whitehorse’s prolific streak continue with another full length album release\, “I’m Not Crying\, You’re Crying”’\, as well as Volume 3 of the band’s popular “The Northern South” series of covers EPs. In addition to the band’s long-awaited return to live touring\, it promises to be another stellar year for Whitehorse and their fans. \n“…musical mad scientists with the stage as their laboratory. Instruments are set up everywhere for them to play\, and they’ll record drum loops live to accompany themselves\, creating a soundscape that sounds huge\, and never leaves you wanting…Simply brilliant.” – Jean-Frederic Vachon\, Diary of a Music Addict \n“…an alchemical blend of torch and twang…Doucet and McClelland have beautiful voices on their own\, and together there’s a natural symmetry that bears a bold witness to the themes of love and loss found in much of their work…” – Jeffrey Loewen\, infonews.ca \n“… dramatic\, acoustic\, roots-pop…with them duetting throughout their set effortlessly\, beautifully and building the songs higher\, fuller than they are in recorded form.” – Mike Bell\, Calgary Herald \nThe box office will be open during intermission on show night for ticket sales for upcoming shows or to become a Patron of the Arts! Becoming a Patron of the Arts member for just $15 a year demonstrates your support for the Arts Council as well as giving you exclusive benefits including pre-access to buy the best seats for select performances and other special offers. \nOpening Act: Jesse Northey \nA decade and change into his career\, Northey has established himself as a songwriter\, with inspiration from the decades’ worth of tune-smiths that have come before him. In tandem with lyrics that explore the myriad ways in which we need to dismantle the artifice of masculinity\, societal norms\, and creativity-sapping careerist ambitions\, this is music firmly rooted in the classics\, but cut with a clear-eyed contemporary viewpoint.\nOn his new album Onion Knight\, Northey presents a distillation of these influences\, with lush and up front drums\, McCartney-esque base\, and songs driven by piano\, vintage keyboards\, and shimmering synths\, bringing to mind Elliott Smith\, Harry Nilsson\, and Aimee Mann. \nJesse Northey starts at 7:30 pm with a 20 minute intermission before Whitehorse takes the stage at 8:15 pm.\nReserved Seating. SUMMARY:The Bros. Landreth
DESCRIPTION:Blizzard Fest and Trail & District Arts Council present The Bros. Landreth with opening act Under the Rocks at The Bailey Theatre on Sunday October 14 at 7:15pm. \nNEW 2 for 1 offer. Buy one ticket get second free. Already got your tickets? Bring a friend for free. \nThe Bros. Landreth welcome a new day with Come Morning\, an album and tour that marks both a rebirth and refinement of the JUNO-winning band’s blend of North American roots music and harmony-heavy soul. \n“Come Morning” finds brothers Joey and Dave lacing their melody-driven songs with layers of atmospheric synth\, organ\, and textured guitar. The group’s previous albums shone a light on their strength as a live act\, capturing the spontaneity and sonic stomp of a band of hard-touring road warriors. \nFor Joey and Dave\, rest wasn’t always an easy thing to find. From their early days attending their father’s gigs as babies (“Mom would take us in the bassinet and stick us under the bar tables\,” says David) to their years logged onstage and on the road\, they’ve spent much of their lives being moved — both physically and emotionally — by music. After pursuing separate careers as sidemen\, they launched The Bros. Landreth with 2013’s Let It Lie\, a debut album that drew upon the shared soundtrack of their childhood — Bonnie Raitt’s blues\, Little Feat’s funky country-rock\, Ry Cooder’s eclectic instrumentals\, Lyle Lovett’s twangy traditionalism — for a sound that saluted the past while planting its flag firmly in the present. This was music for the heart and the heartland\, with songs that evoked the American South one minute and the windswept prairies of the brothers’ Manitoba homeland the next. Fittingly\, the siblings spent years crisscrossing Canada and America in support of its release\, then toured overseas as their popularity swelled. \n“Let It Lie” won the 2015 JUNO Award for “Roots & Traditional Album Of The Year – Group\,” earned The Bros. Landreth a nomination for “International Artist of the Year” at the 2016 UK Americana Music Awards\, and received praise from heroes like Bonnie Raitt. \nTheir second album “’87” arrived in September 2019 and marked an expansion of the band’s sound\, but its accompanying tour was cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic. Deflated\, Joey and Dave found themselves back home in Winnipeg\, riding out the lockdown by funneling their energy into a new batch of recordings. Forced to keep a tight circle due to Covid restrictions\, Joey and Dave worked together in near-seclusion on “Come Morning”\, pulling long hours in the studio and building songs one instrument at a time. They recorded\, layered\, stripped away\, and layered again. Sounds were sampled\, re-sampled\, and twisted into something new. Prioritizing moody textures over fiery fretwork\, Joey took an understated approach to the guitar\, saving his big solos for key moments. He placed an equal emphasis on keyboards\, beefing up the recordings with Hammond organ and analog synth. \n“The overarching theme here is hope\,” says Joey. “Many of these songs lean into the tough stuff\, like processing emotional trauma and finding strength on the other side. It’s a bit of a myth that you’re ever done working on that. Dave and I have just begun the journey\, and that’s why this record represents the rebirth we wanted ’87 to be. We’re working through the pain\, processing it\, unpacking our baggage\, and beginning to move forward. Last time\, we were just walking on a rug that had all kinds of stuff swept under it.” \nAt the album’s core are the Landreths themselves: two born-to-collaborate brothers who sing songs about hard truths and new beginnings\, having been brought back together during a time of unprecedented isolation. \n \nOpening for The Bros. Landreth are Under the Rocks\, an energetic young band based in Kelowna. The band has been together since 2016 but started as a duo years earlier. Comprised of Chris Baxter (Banjo/Mandolin)\, Jordan Klassen (Guitar)\, Drew Schulz (Bass) and Chloe Davidson\, a 3-time Provincial Fiddle champion\, and Canadian Masters Competitor. Inspired by traditional and contemporary American Bluegrass\, UTR applies the modern sensibilities of its collective members to stand on the shoulders of tradition and make music that is creative\, reflective\, relevant\, and entertaining. Under the Rocks pride themselves on the energetic and dynamic nature of their live shows which feature an eclectic mix of musical styles and stories they hope make you want to dance and sing\, or sit and listen. Whether it is exciting instrumentals\, melodic harmonies or thoughtful lyrics Under the Rocks offers something captivating for most everyone. \nTickets are $38.50 and can be bought online at tickets.trail-arts.com\, by calling 250-368-9669\, or by coming into the Box Office at 1501 Cedar Ave.\, Trail from Monday to Friday 12-4 pm. \nGeneral seating. \nShuttle Bus – Book a round trip shuttle bus for only $5. Go to our shuttle bus booking page to check the schedule and book your shuttle here. On-line booking for shuttles ends at 12 noon on show day. If you’d like to make a last minute booking\, please call our box office before 4 pm on show day.
