Trail Pipe Band was 95 years old in 2019 and today the band has an active roster of 10 pipers and 7 drummers in performance led by Bill Bain\, a veteran of the band. The tartan kilts they wear today are modeled after the uniform of the Scots Guards: Royal Stuart tartan kilts and plaids; with green tunics for the pipers and red tunics for the drummers. Their goal is to promote the Scottish tradition by teaching the arts of piping and drumming. \nJoining them for a few tunes is The Scooties School of Highland dance\, which has been running in Castlegar since 1994 under teacher Jaydeen Ashton. The overall aim is to introduce basic language to start conversations around topics that require some finesse. Original songs like ‘The Awkward Song\,’ ‘Be Kind to Yourself\,’ and ‘I’m Trying on Identities’ are written and performed in a modern musical theatre style. \nBy the end of the show students\, educators and parents will have a basic language for fostering healthy relationships including boundaries\, friendships\, sexual preference\, and self-care. Backed by a solid team of some of the most prominent musicians from the Montreal jazz scene\, Huu Bac performs his compositions inspired by his numerous travels in Asia\, Europe and South America. \nHuu Bac was born in Vietnam from parents of Chinese descent. His family moved to Canada when he was 2. In 2002\, he discovered the beauty of the Vietnamese monochord\, the Dan Bau\, under the guidance of master Pham Duc Thanh. In 2003\, an international study grant lead him to the Shanghai Conservatory where he learned the Chinese fiddle\, the Erhu\, which he later perfected at Beijing Central Conservatory with professor Yang Xue and additional private lessons from master Chen Yaoxing. \nBack in Montreal in 2006\, an encounter with renowned Peruvian composer Lucho Quequezana lead him to perform in Peru with the group Sonidos Vivos. Huu Bac’s intimate contact with afro-Peruvian music and music from the Andes became a source of inspiration in his artistic journey\, and lead him to learn the Andean bamboo flute\, the Quena. From 2009 to 2015\, he collaborated twice with the Cirque du Soleil\, recording for the shows “Totem” and “Toruk”. He also recorded for “Canotgraphie”\, a show by artistic director Robert Lepage. \nIn concert\, Huu Bac charms through the beauty and intensity of his musical pieces as well as through his playing of the dan bau (single chord Vietnamese instrument)\, the erhu (Chinese fiddle)\, the quena (Peruvian flute) and the guitar. Only 138 seats available. \nAfter the deliberate separation and an unjust declaration of extinction\, the Sinixt people return to their ancestral land in Canada to continue practicing and protecting their aboriginal rights. “Older Than The Crown” follows the trial of Sinixt tribal member Rick Desautel who in 2010 was charged with hunting as a non-resident and without a proper permit in Canada. Rick harvested an elk on the ancestral land of the Sinixt people in Vallican\, British Columbia. To the Sinixt\, hunting on ancestral land is an aboriginal right gifted to them by Creator. It’s a right that has legally been denied to the Sinixt people since 1956 when the Canadian government unjustly declared them extinct in Canada\, despite the nearly 3\,000 members existing on the Colville Indian Reservation in Washington State. Kunji Ikeda investigates the social climates and hardships that affected the Ikeda family after they were labeled enemy aliens after the December 7\, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor triggered the internment and dispossession of tens of thousands of Japanese-Canadians. \nIkeda conveys his grandparents’ emigration from Japan to British Columbia\, where his grandfather became a successful fisherman in Steveston\, B.C. Then\, in vivid contrast\, his stories follow his family’s incarceration as his grandmother\, father and uncle were held at Rosebery\, an internment camp outside New Denver\, while his grandfather was sent to live and work in a road camp to build the Hope-Princeton Highway. \nWith compassion and unexpected humour\, Kunji Mark Ikeda shares his discovery of where he came from\, how his family navigated their histories\, and how the rampant racism of past generations has affected the Japanese community today. \nThe silver lining?
