SUMMARY:The Marc Atkinson Trio
DESCRIPTION:Trail & District Arts Council presents \nThe Marc Atkinson Trio with Cameron Wilson \nat the Rossland Miners Union Hall \nTwo performances: Wednesday\, October 20 and Thursday\, October 21\, 2021 at 7:30 PM \nSingle Ticket $25. All tickets are general admission. Please see COVID protocols at the end of the event information below before purchasing. \nShow 75 minutes. No Intermission. \nAbout The Marc Atkinson Trio \nAfter more than two decades of musical output\, Marc Atkinson is both difficult to define and readily identifiable. He is first and foremost a masterful acoustic guitarist who combines lyricism\, rhythmic precision\, and technical mastery into a distinctive guitar voice. That voice is further defined by Atkinson’s significant talents as a composer of lush and melodic original works. His virtuosity and compositional strengths are showcased in the recordings and live performances of the Marc Atkinson Trio\, the internationally renowned acoustic trio described by Jurgen Goethe as “one of the top ten of the world’s working string\ntrios.” \nThe current Trio includes Jody Rutherford (guitar)\, Scott White (bass). And for this performance they’re being joined by Cameron Wilson\, a violinist and composer known for his genre-crossing virtuosity and near-limitless musical creativity. Wilson plays with the National Broadcast Orchestra\, Van Django\, and Mariachi del Sol (amongst other ensembles); his compositions have been heard on the CBC\, NPR\, and the venerable BBC; and he’s recorded with everyone from Bryan Adams to Spirit of the West. \nAtkinson is arguably as well known for his contributions to Canada’s roots/acoustic music super group\, The Bills\, where he “explores his mandolin personality\,” while also contributing guitar instrumentals\, vocals\, and original compositions. One of the group’s founding members\, Atkinson is featured on all five of The Bills’ CDs\, including two Juno nominated albums. Along the way\, Atkinson has emerged as a skilled record producer\, taking the helm on recordings not only for the Marc Atkinson Trio\, and the Bills\, but also for a growing list of international music artists. Atkinson has earned producing credits on dozens of CDs\, most of\nthem recorded at The Barn Studio on Hornby Island\, the professional sound studio he opened in 2010. \nWhile Atkinson is distinctly uncomfortable discussing music awards\, he is the recipient of many of them. He is a Juno nominee and winner of two Western Canadian Music Awards\, including a nomination for Outstanding Album Award. His CD\, The Marc Atkinson Trio II\, was voted one of the top five albums in North America by Acoustic Guitar Magazine\, and his music has been published in Guitar Player Magazine.Marc received the 2021 Instrumental Solo Artist of the Year at Canadian Folk Music Awards. \n“It’s not just that Atkinson is so technically proficient that he can spin out seemingly impossible-to-play\, breathtaking lines at will\, it’s the emotional nuance and sense of humour in his work that are so engaging. Drawing on classical\, jazz\, roots\, and even some rock traditions\, he dips into a deep well he has visited many times to surprise and delight his audience with new takes on old tunes and sensitive renderings of his own highly melodic compositions.” Rick Gibbs\, Island Jazz \nOur programs are made possible by funding support from the BC Arts Council\, the Government of British Columbia\, and the BC Touring Council. This project is funded [in part] by the Government of Canada. / Ce projet est financé [en partie] par le gouvernement du Canada. \nCOVID Protocols \n\nAnyone 12 years-old or over must have two doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine to enter the venue. All tickets are general admission. Please see COVID protocols at the end of the event information below before purchasing. \nShow 80 minutes. No Intermission. \n“Josephine” is a one-woman biographical musical that combines cabaret\, theatre\, and dance to tell the story of the iconic burlesque performer Josephine Baker.\nBefore Ella\, Tina\, Billie\, or Beyoncé\, there was Josephine\, the first African American international superstar\, and one of the most remarkable figures of the 20th Century. Josephine Baker was born in St. Louis in 1906. She achieved only moderate success in the United States\, despite starring alongside white romantic leading men in films in the 30’s. But after moving to Europe in 1924 she became an international superstar. \nOff the stage Josephine was also a remarkable woman – a spy for the French Resistance in WWII\, a civil rights activist\, and mother to 12 adopted children. She had multiple interracial marriages and homosexual relationships and performed in men’s clothing before the term “drag” was commonly used. Her success often gave her the opportunity to live free from the racial oppression of her home nation\, though she never stopped yearning for acceptance in America. Josephine shatters stereotypes of race\, gender roles and sexuality in this intimate\, charming and haunting cabaret with a twist. \nLearn more at the website https://josephinetheplay.com/ \nRecommended for audiences 19+. SUMMARY:Blade Runner - The Final Cut
DESCRIPTION:Trail & District Arts Council and The Royal Theatre present BLADE RUNNER – THE FINAL CUT at the Silver Screen Drive-In. \nA blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator. Blade Runner is not just revelatory because it was way ahead of its time in visuals and stye that still influence every science fiction movie to this day\, but also in the characters and the noir feel.\nIn the early twenty-first century\, the Tyrell Corporation developed robots\, called “replicants”\, which looked and acted like humans. When some replicants doing dangerous off-Earth work mutiny replicants become illegal on Earth. Police units\, called “blade runners”\, must ‘retire’ any replicant that is found on Earth\, with anyone convicted of aiding or assisting a replicant being sentenced to death. \nIn Los Angeles\, 2019 Deckard\, a former blade runner\, is called out of retirement when four known replicants have made their way back to Earth. On their trail he begins to ask questions about what the replicants want with the Tyrell Corporation after they try to infiltrate it. After talking to Rachael\, who works as Tyrell’s assistant Deckard begins to question everything.\nRotten Tomatoes 92 % Critic’s Score and 96% Audience Score. \n“This remains an astonishing achievement: a Dystopian sci-fi epic that is also one of the best film noirs of recent times.” – Geoffrey Macnab\, Independent (UK) \n“The single most immersive and tactile world ever created for the cinema.” – Tom Huddleston\, Time Out \n“Ford\, with his Star Wars cachet\, was Blade Runner’s top-line draw\, but it’s Hauer’s movie all the way\, his shimmering “replicant” providing the tonal touchstone for Ridley Scott’s severally reworked masterpiece.” – Mark Kermode\, Observer (UK) \nDirector: Ridley Scott/ Cast: Harrison Ford\, Sean Young\, Rutger Hauer\, Daryl Hannah / Genre: Action\, Mystery\, Sci-fi\, Thriller / Length: 1h 57 mins / Rating: 14A / Country: USA / Language: English\, German\, Cantonese\, Japanese\, Hungarian\, Arabic\, Korean \nLimited capacity.
