Buy a 3 performance Classical Series pass for $72. Only 100 tickets available for Griff shows. NEW – Purchase a 2023-24 Patron Membership $25 and get a 20% discount on all 2023-24 shows presented by Trail & District Arts Council (some exceptions apply) plus more benefits. More details here. \nThe Trail & District Arts Council presents Janelle Fung and Marina Thibeault: Invisible Cities performing classical pieces for piano and viola in The Griff at The Bailey Theatre on Friday\, February 9 at 7:30 pm as part of our Classical series. \nCelebrated concert duo Marina Thibeault (viola) and Janelle Fung (piano) delight audiences across Canada\, the United States\, and Europe with their elegant\, spellbinding performances and engaging presence. \nTheir program “Invisible Cities” includes: \nInvisible Cities by British composer Charlotte Bray\, one of the most esteemed and in-demand composers of her generation. Her music is exhilarating\, inherently vivid\, and richly expressive with lyrical intensity. She won an Ivor Novello Award in 2019 (Solo or Duo) for Invisible Cities\, where fragments of melody form a connecting thread through the score\, linking movements together. The work is inspired by the novel ‘Invisible Cities’ by Italo Calvino. \nSonata op.11 no:4 Fantaisieby Paul Hindemith\, arguably THE composer for the viola. This sonata’s musical language has a rather unusual form\, with a short introductory movement\, a theme and variations\, and a finale that interrupts the variation-sequence only to resume it later. It suggests the genre of fantasy-sonata cultivated by some of the Romantic composers. \ni>The Sonata for Viola and Piano\, Op. 147 is the last composition by Dmitri Shostakovich. It was completed on July 5\, 1975\, weeks before his death. It is dedicated to Fyodor Druzhinin\, violist of the Beethoven Quartet. \nAbout the Artists: \nMarina Thibeault is a 2023 JUNO Award winner for Classical Album of the year (Large Ensemble) for the album “Viola Borealis”.\nSince being named Radio-Canada’s classical “Revelation” for 2016-2017\, violist Marina Thibeault has become an accomplished soloist and chamber musician playing across genres. Marina’s many performance highlights include Berlioz’s Harold in Italy with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Orchestre Métropolitain in Montreal and the North American premiere of Peteris Vasks’s concerto with the Sinfonia Toronto. Marina’s first album\, “Toquade” (2017)\, was nominated by the ADISQ and Prix Opus for Album of the Year. \nJanelle Fung – Canadian pianist Janelle Fung is an avid chamber musician\, and has appeared in concert with the Ying Quartet\, New York Woodwind Quintet\, Mark Fewer and Matt Haimovitz\, and tours with Prairie Debut and Jeunesses Musicales du Canada. Her interest in opera has also led to collaborations with Nicole Cabell\, Teresa Stratas\, and William Warfield. Ms. Fung has won numerous national and international competitions\, including the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition\, the Concours OSM-Standard Life\, the Canadian Music Competition\, and BC Touring Council “Artist of the Year” in 2014. \nLearn more about Marina Thibeault at https://www.marinathibeault.com/en/. \nLearn more about Janelle Fung at https://www.janellefung.com/. \nGeneral Admission. We also gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia. \nOur Classical Series Includes: \nTrio Fibonacci: The Giants of Minimalism Thursday\, October 12 at 7:30 pm.\nDiscover a captivating body of works as Trio Fibonacci perform pieces that go straight to the heart of melody in The Giants of Minimalism. The highlight of this concert is Max Richter’s masterly recomposition of the “Four Seasons” by Vivaldi\, which takes us to the convergence of past and present. Works by Glass\, Nyman\, Cohen\, Radiohead\, Eno and Einaudi complete this programme of spellbinding simplicity. \nJessica McMann Trio Sunday\, November 5 at 3:00 pm (with afternoon tea service).\nThe Jessica McMann Trio is the instrumental musical project of Jessica McMann\, an Alberta -based Cree (Cowessess\, SK)\, multi-disciplinary artist. Jessica works with diverse musicians to share lesser-known repertoire based around themes of ecology\, spirituality\, and language recovery. A classically trained flutist her work fuses together traditional language and dance with her own contemporary experiences as an Indigenous woman and Two-Spirit person. \nJanelle Fung and Marina Thibeault: Invisible Cities Friday\, February 9 at 7:30 pm.\nCelebrated concert duo Marina Thibeault (viola) and Janelle Fung (piano) delight audiences across Canada\, the United States\, and Europe with their elegant\, spellbinding performances and engaging presence. SUMMARY:Mariel Buckley Duo
DESCRIPTION:Blizzard Music Festival and Trail & District Arts Council present \nMariel Buckley Duo \nat NEW VENUE! Now at the Rossland Miners Union Hall\, Columbia Ave\, Rossland BC \nThursday\, January 25\, 2024 at 7:30pm \nThis performance has been relocated to the Rosslad Miners Union Hall. Tickets now ONLY available through the Blizzard Fest website. Tickets can be purchased from Blizzardfest here https://blizzardmusicfest.tickit.ca/events/21911 Tickets are $35 plus taxes and fees. \nPurchasing a Blizzard Music Fest Pass? Mariel Buckley’s performance is included in your Pass…no need to buy a separate ticket. Watch for Blizzard Music Fest passes to go on sale around Nov 1st through the Blizzard Music Fest website. \nTrail & District Arts Council and Blizzard Music Festival present country/alt-folk singer-songwriter Mariel Buckley. Unapologetically genuine\, wry\, and soft-hearted\, Mariel Buckley aims to find herself squarely on the fringes: singing and writing songs for the underdog. \nHer candor and magnetic live shows have been charming listeners across North America since her debut LP\, “Driving In The Dark” [2018]. With some impressive accolades on the way including Roots Artist of the Year (Western Canadian Music Awards\, 2019)\, and taking home the grandprize of $100\,000 from the year long Project Wild commercial radio artist contest. \nNow\, with her follow-up album “Everywhere I Used To Be” [2022]\, Buckley looks to turn country/folk music on its head. Delivered with Buckley’s signature crooning brand of angst-ridden alt-folk\, anchored by the haunting whine of the pedal steel\, and rounded out by heavy synth pads\, the resulting collection is a driving\, swooning\, toe-tapping catharsis. \nWorking with producer Marcus Paquin (The Weather Station\, The Barr Brothers\, Arcade Fire\, TheNational)\, Buckley made an intentional move towards decidedly pop/contemporary production while leaving the space necessary for the songs to speak. Her mysterious ambiguity around genre\, traditional storytelling\, and identity is what gives these new songs such an honest shine. Buckley continues to be a trailblazer\, with a firm grip on the steering wheel and a destination in mind – we’re just happy to be along for the ride. \n“Buckley offers touchstones to anyone who has felt the same frustrations and feelings of being a misfit\, letting them know they’re not alone and that they too can find themselves.” – Fatea Records \n“Buckley’s been fine tuning her vision for years now\, and she deserves to be talked about in the same breath as the artists who inspire her.” – Exclaim! Magazine \nMariel Buckley’s show is part of the Blizzard Music Festival. Tickets to this show will be included in the Blizzard Music Festival Pass. If you intend to purchase a Blizzard Music Festival pass\, you do not need to purchase tickets to Mariel Buckley performance through this website. Blizzard Fest passes will go on sale in November 2023. Blizzard Music Festival runs annually during the last weekend of January. \nMariel Buckley’s show is made possible thanks to funding from the BC Arts Council\, BC Touring Council\, the Government of Canada\, and Tourism South Kootenay. We also gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia.

SUMMARY:Les Filles Du Roi
DESCRIPTION:Trail & District Arts Council’s MONDAY CINEMA \nLes Filles de Roi \nat The Royal Theatre\, 1597 Bay Avenue\, Trail. \nMonday\, December 4th @ 4 pm \n$12/person – No assigned seating. Only 143 seats available. \nAdapted from the award-winning musical by Corey Payette and Julie McIsaac\, Les Filles du Roi (The King’s Daughters) tells the powerful story of a young girl\, Kateri\, and her brother Jean-Baptiste\, whose lives are disrupted upon the arrival of les filles du roi in ‘New France’ (now Montreal) in 1665. They forge an unlikely relationship with the young fille Marie-Jean Lespérance – whose dream of a new life is more complicated than she could have imagined. Over the course of a year\, Mohawk\, French and English journeys collide\, setting the stage for the Canada we know today. \nThis gorgeous award-winning musical in English\, French and Kanien’Kéha (Mohawk) has its theatrical premiere on the stage in 2018 to glowing reviews. Critics called it “a work of monumental importance”\, “heartfelt\, ambitious and tremendously earnest”\, “musically rich”\, “a linguistic adventure”\, and a “sumptuous reimagining of our history”. \nA deeply moving and unique work\, it’s a perfect vehicle that uncovers a perspective different from the one told by Settler culture\, one that redefines the Canadian narrative. Now beautifully shot with Payette’s directorial panache\, the work will have a broader reach for people to reimagine our history in more inclusive and accurate ways. \nFilmmaker Biography:\nCorey Payette is an interdisciplinary storyteller\, writer\, composer\, producer\, director in TV and film.
