SUMMARY:The Marc Atkinson Trio
DESCRIPTION:Trail & District Arts Council presents \nThe Marc Atkinson Trio with Cameron Wilson \nat the Rossland Miners Union Hall \nTwo performances: Wednesday\, October 20 and Thursday\, October 21\, 2021 at 7:30 PM \nSingle Ticket $25. All tickets are general admission. Please see COVID protocols at the end of the event information below before purchasing. \nShow 75 minutes. No Intermission. \nAbout The Marc Atkinson Trio \nAfter more than two decades of musical output\, Marc Atkinson is both difficult to define and readily identifiable. He is first and foremost a masterful acoustic guitarist who combines lyricism\, rhythmic precision\, and technical mastery into a distinctive guitar voice. That voice is further defined by Atkinson’s significant talents as a composer of lush and melodic original works. His virtuosity and compositional strengths are showcased in the recordings and live performances of the Marc Atkinson Trio\, the internationally renowned acoustic trio described by Jurgen Goethe as “one of the top ten of the world’s working string\ntrios.” \nThe current Trio includes Jody Rutherford (guitar)\, Scott White (bass). And for this performance they’re being joined by Cameron Wilson\, a violinist and composer known for his genre-crossing virtuosity and near-limitless musical creativity. Wilson plays with the National Broadcast Orchestra\, Van Django\, and Mariachi del Sol (amongst other ensembles); his compositions have been heard on the CBC\, NPR\, and the venerable BBC; and he’s recorded with everyone from Bryan Adams to Spirit of the West. \nAtkinson is arguably as well known for his contributions to Canada’s roots/acoustic music super group\, The Bills\, where he “explores his mandolin personality\,” while also contributing guitar instrumentals\, vocals\, and original compositions. One of the group’s founding members\, Atkinson is featured on all five of The Bills’ CDs\, including two Juno nominated albums. Along the way\, Atkinson has emerged as a skilled record producer\, taking the helm on recordings not only for the Marc Atkinson Trio\, and the Bills\, but also for a growing list of international music artists. Atkinson has earned producing credits on dozens of CDs\, most of\nthem recorded at The Barn Studio on Hornby Island\, the professional sound studio he opened in 2010. \nWhile Atkinson is distinctly uncomfortable discussing music awards\, he is the recipient of many of them. He is a Juno nominee and winner of two Western Canadian Music Awards\, including a nomination for Outstanding Album Award. His CD\, The Marc Atkinson Trio II\, was voted one of the top five albums in North America by Acoustic Guitar Magazine\, and his music has been published in Guitar Player Magazine.Marc received the 2021 Instrumental Solo Artist of the Year at Canadian Folk Music Awards. \n“It’s not just that Atkinson is so technically proficient that he can spin out seemingly impossible-to-play\, breathtaking lines at will\, it’s the emotional nuance and sense of humour in his work that are so engaging. Drawing on classical\, jazz\, roots\, and even some rock traditions\, he dips into a deep well he has visited many times to surprise and delight his audience with new takes on old tunes and sensitive renderings of his own highly melodic compositions.” Rick Gibbs\, Island Jazz \nOur programs are made possible by funding support from the BC Arts Council\, the Government of British Columbia\, and the BC Touring Council. This project is funded [in part] by the Government of Canada. / Ce projet est financé [en partie] par le gouvernement du Canada. \nCOVID Protocols \n\nAnyone 12 years-old or over must have two doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine to enter the venue. Josephine Baker was born in St. Louis in 1906. She achieved only moderate success in the United States\, despite starring alongside white romantic leading men in films in the 30’s. SUMMARY:Blade Runner - The Final Cut
DESCRIPTION:Trail & District Arts Council and The Royal Theatre present BLADE RUNNER – THE FINAL CUT at the Silver Screen Drive-In. \nA blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator. Blade Runner is not just revelatory because it was way ahead of its time in visuals and stye that still influence every science fiction movie to this day\, but also in the characters and the noir feel.\nIn the early twenty-first century\, the Tyrell Corporation developed robots\, called “replicants”\, which looked and acted like humans. When some replicants doing dangerous off-Earth work mutiny replicants become illegal on Earth. Police units\, called “blade runners”\, must ‘retire’ any replicant that is found on Earth\, with anyone convicted of aiding or assisting a replicant being sentenced to death. \nIn Los Angeles\, 2019 Deckard\, a former blade runner\, is called out of retirement when four known replicants have made their way back to Earth. On their trail he begins to ask questions about what the replicants want with the Tyrell Corporation after they try to infiltrate it. After talking to Rachael\, who works as Tyrell’s assistant Deckard begins to question everything.\nRotten Tomatoes 92 % Critic’s Score and 96% Audience Score. \n“This remains an astonishing achievement: a Dystopian sci-fi epic that is also one of the best film noirs of recent times.” – Geoffrey Macnab\, Independent (UK) \n“The single most immersive and tactile world ever created for the cinema.” – Tom Huddleston\, Time Out \n“Ford\, with his Star Wars cachet\, was Blade Runner’s top-line draw\, but it’s Hauer’s movie all the way\, his shimmering “replicant” providing the tonal touchstone for Ridley Scott’s severally reworked masterpiece.” – Mark Kermode\, Observer (UK) \nDirector: Ridley Scott/ Cast: Harrison Ford\, Sean Young\, Rutger Hauer\, Daryl Hannah / Genre: Action\, Mystery\, Sci-fi\, Thriller / Length: 1h 57 mins / Rating: 14A / Country: USA / Language: English\, German\, Cantonese\, Japanese\, Hungarian\, Arabic\, Korean \nLimited capacity. SUMMARY:September Double Bill- North of Nightfall and Alone Across the Arctic
DESCRIPTION:Trail & District Arts Council and The Royal Theatre present \nNorth of Nightfall and Alone Across the Arctic – Double Bill at the Silver Screen Drive-in \nSeptember START TIME – 8:00 pm \nBoth films for just $12/person! Maximum 6 people per car – Need to add people to your car? Pay at the gate on show night or call our Box Office 250-368-9669 to add people. \nWe’ve got an Arctic adventure documentary double bill this week! Experience the Arctic from new perspectives on foot\, by canoe\, or on a mountain bike on the 40-foot screen at the Silver Screen Drive-in. \nExplorer Adam Shoalts is “Alone Across the Arctic” when he embarks on a record-breaking estimated 4000 km journey across the Canadian Arctic by canoe and on foot\, alone. Hailed as one of the greatest living explorers\, and “Canada’s Indiana Jones\,” Adam Shoalts embarks on an epic and death-defying four-month solo journey across the uncharted Canadian Arctic wilderness. From the Yukon to Nunavut\, Shoalts relies on his well-honed survival skills in a race against the elements\, navigating the treacherous and uncharted waterways before the deadly grip of winter renders the terrain impassable. \nIn 2016 Shoalts was named a national champion of the Trans-Canada Trail and in 2018 Explorer-in-Residence of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. The documentary “Alone Across the Arctic” is the accompanying piece to the best-selling book “Beyond the Trees: A Journey Alone Across Canada’s Arctic” by Adam Shoalts. Where the book represents the mental and spiritual journey in comparison the documentary details the physical journey. Stunning visuals that barely capture the vastness of the North. A must-see for anyone who has ever considered a wilderness adventure in the Far North! \nDirector: Francis Luta / Cast: Adam Shoalts\nGenre: Documentary\, Adventure / Length: 1h 26m / Rating: G / Country: Canada/ Language: English \n \n“North of Nightfall” sees an elite group of mountain bikers travel to a remote island in the Canadian High Arctic. Their goal? To pioneer big mountain lines and progress their sport beyond anything the world has seen. Hidden among the glaciers on Axel Heiberg Island\, high in the Arctic Circle\, are mountain bike lines too incredible to ignore. Harsh temperatures\, volatile weather and nine-month winters mean the area is normally devoid of human life. But each summer\, this frozen landscape flourishes under endless daylight\, revealing a spectacular ecosystem. Join Darren Berrecloth\, Carson Storch\, Cam Zink and Tom Van Steenbergen in “North of Nightfall” as they embark on an expedition to the top of the world to explore this relatively unknown land. 12 hours from the nearest hospital\, they discover a rapidly changing environment steeped in history along with ground-breaking descents unlike anything anyone’s ridden to date. \nDirector: Jeremy Grant / Cast: Cam Zink\, Carson Storch\, Darren Berrecloth\, Tom Van Steenbergen / Genre: Documentary\, Adventure / Length: 1h 5m / Rating: G / Country: USA / Language: English \nGate opens at 7:00 pm. SUMMARY:Done / Undone
DESCRIPTION:Trail & District Arts Council and The Royal Theatre present \nDone/Undone – An Original Bard on the Beach Production \nat the Silver Screen Drive-In. August START TIME – 9:00 pm \n$12/person – Maximum 6 people per car – Need to add people to your car? Pay at the gate on show night or call our Box Office 250-368-9669 to add people. \nJoin us at the Drive-In for you an original live recorded performance of “DONE/UNDONE” by Kate Besworth (2021). “Done/Undone” is inspired by a complex modern question: how well do Shakespeare’s plays stand the test of time – and should some of them not be staged anymore? This provocative and entertaining response stars Bard on the Beach veteran actors Charlie Gallant (Shakespeare in Love\, 2019) and Harveen Sandhu (As You Like It\, 2018). They bring multiple characters to life\, including two battling scholars\, a pair of actors in Hamlet\, a theatre-going couple divided over Shakespeare’s appeal – and Shakespeare himself! \nThe show‘s central theme could be seen as challenging for a Shakespeare festival. Instead\, Bard’s Artistic Director Christopher Gaze\, says “This production brings an original and thoughtful new perspective to complicated modern questions about Shakespeare’s works. Its spirit\, wit and insights will resonate with many people and points of view.” \nAudience Advisory: The film includes mature themes and strong language. SUMMARY:Jaws
DESCRIPTION:Trail & District Arts Council and The Royal Theatre present \nJAWS \nat the Silver Screen Drive-In. Pay at the gate on show night or call our Box Office 250-368-9669 to add people. \nThe Silver Screen Drive-in brings you JAWS\, the film that stopped everyone going in the ocean! When a killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community\, it’s up to a local sheriff\, a marine biologist\, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down. \nIt’s a hot summer on Amity Island\, a small community whose main business is its beaches. When new Sheriff Martin Brody discovers the remains of a shark attack victim\, his first inclination is to close the beaches to swimmers. This doesn’t sit well with Mayor Larry Vaughn and several of the local businessmen. Brody backs down to his regret as that weekend a young boy is killed by the predator. The dead boy’s mother puts out a bounty on the shark and Amity is soon swamped with amateur hunters and fisherman hoping to cash in on the reward. A local fisherman with much experience hunting sharks\, Quint\, offers to hunt down the creature for a hefty fee. Soon Quint\, Brody and Matt Hooper from the Oceanographic Institute are at sea hunting the Great White shark. As Brody succinctly surmises after their first encounter with the creature\, they’re going to need a bigger boat. SUMMARY:Fright Night: Halloween & Friday the 13th
DESCRIPTION:Trail & District Arts Council and The Royal Theatre present Friday Fright Night Double Bill: “Halloween” & “Friday the 13th” at the Silver Screen Drive-In. New August START TIME – 9:00 pm \nIt’s Friday Fright Night with two classic horror films from the 1970’s and 1980’s\, “Halloween” and “Friday the 13th”! On a cold “Halloween” night in 1963\, six-year-old Michael Myers brutally murdered his 17-year-old sister\, Judith. He was sentenced and locked away. Fifteen years later to the day\, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield\, Illinois to kill again. Dr. Loomis knows Michael is coming back to Haddonfield\, but by the time the town realizes it’s too late. This film established Jamie Lee Curtis as a scream queen icon and made the boogeyman very real! \nRated 96 % on Rotten Tomatoes! \n“Who could have predicted that the low-budget pic Halloween would have a profound influence on an industry\, not to mention on the concept of Halloween itself?” – Mike Emery\, Austin Chronicle \n“…will have you scared witless by the time the end credits roll; low budget horror hog heaven.” – Chris Hewitt\, Empire Magazine \nDirectors: John Carpenter / Cast: Jamie Lee Curtis\, Donald Pleasance\, Tony Moran / Genre: Horror\, Thriller / Length: 1h 31min / Country: USA / Language: English / Rating: 18A \nIt’s “Friday the 13th” and a group of camp counselors are stalked and murdered by an unknown assailant while trying to reopen a summer camp which was the site of a child’s drowning and a grisly double murder years before. In 1957\, a young boy named Jason Voorhees drowns in a lake near Camp Crystal Lake. The next year\, two counselors are murdered. In 1980\, a descendant of the original owners reopens Camp Crystal Lake with some counselors’ help despite its history of murder. The counselors get killed one by one by a mysterious person. Could it be Jason out for revenge? \n“A hugely influential film that contributed to the 1980s horror boom.” – Matt Ford\, BBC.com \n“A campfire boogeyman story designed to… build tension and deliver a few well-timed shocks\, which it does with precision and even a bit of artistry.” – James Kendrick\, Q Network Film Desk \nDirectors: Sean S.
