SUMMARY:Beyond the Legal Limit by Pat Henman
DESCRIPTION:TDAC’s 6 Beats Apart Series presents \nPat Henman’s Beyond the Legal Limit – Livestream at The Bailey Theatre \nFriday\, April 16th – Virtual ‘Doors’ at 7:15 pm. Show begins at 7:30 pm – 45 minute show followed by 15 minute Q & A between Nadine Tremblay and Pat Henman. \nAttendees will be able to their questions! An email will be sent with details before the show! \nPick-Your-Price Ticketing! Choose to pay between 0 – $50 for your virtual ticket. Only one ticket is needed per screen so everyone in your household can watch the show on one virtual ticket. If you have tickets for the original in-person show\, please contact our box office for a refund or to convert your tickets. \n‘Beyond the Legal Limit’ is a theatrical performance with music based on performer Pat Henman’s memoir\, which tells the story of a terrible car accident and its aftermath both traumatic and hopeful. A unique project developed entirely during the COVID-19 crisis. \nOn a sunny Sunday afternoon in June 2013\, singer Pat Henman\, was driving home on the highway with her 19-year-old daughter\, Maia\, when they were struck head-on by a drunk driver. Although both survived\, their physical injuries remain. The emotional toll on their well-being\, and that of their family\, has become a story that inspired Pat to express the intensity and joy of a life changing event in the only way she knew how—on stage with songs. \nPart storytelling\, part concert\, Pat tells the story of trauma and recovery in this unique and passionate one act drama with music. Embracing the many colours of survival Canadian playwright and Genie Award nominee\, Kelly Rebar\, adapted her words while Canadian musician and composer\, Konrad Pluta helped express them. These talented artists are joined by Theatre Director\, writer and performer\, Tracey Power\, an award-winning BC artist\, to bring Pat’s story to life. \nAs Pat narrates her story\, she is joined on stage by two Nelson artists. Sydney Black is well known as a performing artist\, as well as a producer (Black Productions) of musicals such as Mamma Mia! and Cabaret. Here Sydney uses her singing talents to elevate the spoken word as musician Robyn Lamb accompanies. Robyn\, a graduate of classical music from McGill University and Vancouver Community College\, was the musical director for Mamma Mia! In Nelson\, and is preparing her one woman show\, Me\, Myself and Ireland\, to present at the city’s Capitol Theatre. \nPat describes the importance of music in her story. “Theatre is storytelling; musical theatre adds an extra element that supports the text\, a thread that connects thoughts\, driving the plot. Music can express what sometimes the spoken word can’t always do. Konrad’s songs are wildly dramatic and emotional. I get goose bumps listening to them.” \nPat is a veteran of Canadian theatre as actor\, singer\, and director\, with radio\, television and film credits spanning over a 40-year career in the performing arts. She recently directed Mamma Mia! in Nelson\, BC. Pat received a Special Citation in recognition for her “considerable Contribution to Arts\, Culture and Heritage in the City of Nelson\, BC” in 2018\, and was nominated for the Courage to Come Back Award in 2015. She is an appointed director of the BC Arts Council and the Pacific Regional Victims Advisory Committee. She is also an active volunteer for MADD Canada. \nCreated with support from the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance\, the Amy Ferguson Institute\, the Nelson Civic Theatre Artist in Residence Program\, and the Canada Council for the Arts. Pat would like to express her gratitude for the support shown to her by her family\, her creative team\, her cast\, and the funding agents that believed in this project. \nTickets may be purchased online 24/7 or by calling the Box Office at 250-368-9669 from Monday to Friday 12-4 pm. \nHow to Access the Livestream Show: \n1. Contact us at info@trail-arts.com or 250-368-9669. \nAbout Harry Manx \nBlend Indian folk melodies with slide guitar blues\, add a sprinkle of gospel and throw in some compelling grooves. It’s a recipe that goes down easy and leaves you hungry for more. “Mysticssippi” blues man Harry Manx has been called an “essential link” between the music of East and West\, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. He has created a unique sound that is hard to forget and deliciously addictive to listen to. \nHarry forged his distinctive style by studying at the feet of the masters. First as a sound man in the blues clubs of Toronto\, where he worked with a slew of blues legends\, and then under a rigorous tutelage with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt in India. Harry played slide guitar for many years before meeting Bhatt in Rajasthan\, but he started at the beginning under Bhatt’s tutelage\, unlearning most of what he knew about playing a slide instrument. Bhatt invented the 20-stringed Mohan Veena\, which has become Harry’s signature instrument\, and his teachings led to Harry’s exploration of the connection between Indian ragas and blues scales\, which eventually led to the Indo-blues hybrid that has become his style. \nManx believes that “Like many people I’m interested in my own development as a person and that’s represented in my songs\, I’m searching for truth through art and spirituality. My songs are a synthesis of everything I’ve absorbed\, all my experiences and I share that. I’m glad that it means something to people.” \nManx is a prolific artist\, releasing 12 albums in a 12-year span with no signs of stopping. He has received seven Maple Blues Awards\, six Juno nominations\, the Canadian Folk Music Award in 2005 for Best Solo Artist and won CBC Radio’s “Great Canadian Blues Award” in 2007. His most recent original release\, “Om Suite Ohm” was voted by the Montreal daily La Presse as one of only 4 CDs to watch for in 2013. Guitar Player Magazine called it “his most fully realized work to date”. \nTickets may be purchased online 24/7 or by calling the Box Office at 250-368-9669 from Monday to Friday 12-4 pm. \nHow to Access the Livestream Show: \n1.
