SUMMARY:Trail Maple Leaf Band\, Trail Pipe Band and Scotties School of Dance - Music in the Park
DESCRIPTION:Trail and District Arts Council presents Kootenay Savings Music in the Park Trail Pipe Band with opening act Trail Maple Leaf Band on Thursday June 22nd at 6:15 pm at Gyro Park\, Trail. \nThe Trail & District Arts Council is very excited to get the community back together this Summer at Gyro Park for Kootenay Savings Music in The Park. With eleven shows and two acts per night\, from June 22 to August 31\, it’s the perfect opportunity for all the family to get together outside and listen to great live music. \nThis season we have a great mix of music from local favourites to touring talent! \nOn June 22 we kick off the season with the Trail Maple Leaf Band playing concert band pieces\, show tune medleys and marches\, followed by Trail Pipe Band with guests Scotties School of Dance for an evening of Scottish piping and dancing. \nUnder the direction of Joseph S. Fuoco\, the Trail Pipe Band has been delighting local audiences for over 100 years performing at indoor and outdoor concerts\, civic parades\, and special functions. The 30 to 40 band members play concert band pieces\, show tune medleys and marches. \nJoining them this year will be the Trail Pipe Band\, who will be playing pipe band favourites from their huge repertoire. Trail Pipe Band was 95 years old in 2019 and today the band has an active roster of 10 pipers and 7 drummers in performance led by Bill Bain\, a veteran of the band. The tartan kilts they wear today are modeled after the uniform of the Scots Guards: Royal Stuart tartan kilts and plaids; with green tunics for the pipers and red tunics for the drummers. Their goal is to promote the Scottish tradition by teaching the arts of piping and drumming. \nJoining them for a few tunes is The Scooties School of Highland dance\, which has been running in Castlegar since 1994 under teacher Jaydeen Ashton. The dancers participate in community events\, festivals and celebrations\, along with competing in dance competitions and dance exams throughout the year. Dancers range in age from 3 to adult……. remember\, you are never too old to learn to dance! \nBring a lawn chair. Admission is by donation – $3 minimum suggested. Or support the Trail Arts Council’s programming by buying a Season Pass for the whole summer for $50! Passes will be available soon. \nAs part of Music in the Park 2023 we will once again be collaborating with Trail’s Incredible Farmers Market. Our two Night Markets on July 20 and August 17 are awesome events that bring the community together with Music\, Food\, Beer Garden and Farmers Market. So much fun in Gyro Park. \nThis show is made possible thanks to support from Kootenay Savings Credit Union\, Teck Trail Operations\, Columbia Basin Trust\, BC Arts Council\, BC Touring Council\, the Government of Canada\, Tourism South Kootenay\, Pharmasave Trail and our media partner Bounce Radio. We also gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia. \nUpcoming shows: \n.June 29: Twin Rivers Choir performing classical\, pop\, Broadway\, jazz\, world music and more. Followed by My Son the Hurricane the 11-piece multi-horn\, multi-drummer\, multi-singer brass funk beast returns! \n.July 6: Empire of Nothing turns up the sound with alt and indie rock and blues. Then AV and The Inner City\, a soul/roots group made up of award-winning female singers. \n.July 13: The Oot n’ Oots\, a JUNO nominated family that makes rock n’ roll music for families and Selkirk College fiddle camp instructors play East Coast Old Time Fiddling tunes. \n.July 20: Night Market: Doggone Brothers mixing bluegrass\, old country and old-time music before Diyet and The Love Soldiers play their alternative country\, folk\, roots originals. \n.July 27: Elise Boulanger brings her Indie-Folk 3 piece to play a unique chamber music/indie folk mix\, followed by Tanika Charles and her band playing a contemporary twist on classic soul and R & B sounds. \n.August 3: Vibetown is a 5-piece horn band playing uplifting covers. SUMMARY:Sansei: the Storyteller
DESCRIPTION:TDAC’s Performing Arts Trail Series presents Sansei: The Storyteller and Yamabiko Taiko Drummers (Double Bill) on Tuesday\, April 18\, 2023 at 7:30 pm at The Bailey Theatre. \nIt may seem as though a light-hearted look at the Japanese Internment isn’t possible until you hear Kunji Ikeda say\, “If the Japanese Internment of WWII didn’t happen\, I wouldn’t be alive.” Sansei: The Storyteller uses dance\, theatre\, and humour to tell the story of one of Canada’s darkest decisions. Kunji Ikeda investigates the social climates and hardships that affected the Ikeda family after they were labeled enemy aliens after the December 7\, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor triggered the internment and dispossession of tens of thousands of Japanese-Canadians. \nIkeda conveys his grandparents’ emigration from Japan to British Columbia\, where his grandfather became a successful fisherman in Steveston\, B.C. Then\, in vivid contrast\, his stories follow his family’s incarceration as his grandmother\, father and uncle were held at Rosebery\, an internment camp outside New Denver\, while his grandfather was sent to live and work in a road camp to build the Hope-Princeton Highway. \nWith compassion and unexpected humour\, Kunji Mark Ikeda shares his discovery of where he came from\, how his family navigated their histories\, and how the rampant racism of past generations has affected the Japanese community today. \nThe silver lining? If not for the internment\, Ikeda wouldn’t be here to tell this story today… \nIn a tale that is both illuminating and profoundly personal\, Sansei: The Storyteller weaves together dance\, narrative\, historical audio\, and recorded family recollections in a moving work that CBC hailed as both “timely” and “uniquely beautiful.” Created and performed by Kunji Ikeda. Watch the trailer at https://youtu.be/tJBU7pDNEKs \nCreator/performer Ikeda “dances and says more with the movement of his fingers than many actors do with reams of dialogue” -Calgary Herald \n“A tale of profound historical impact. Sansei is storytelling at it’s finest; sophisticated\, meaningful\, moving\, and humorous.” – Laurie Fife\, Ottawa Storytellers Society \n“He’s a terrific stage presence… a natural-born storyteller. The agony and ambiguity of the Japanese Internment comes out as much in his dance as it does in his words.” – Stephen Hunt\, Calgary Herald \nAwards:\nOutstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama (Nominated) – Betty Mitchell Award 2019\,\nOutstanding Choreography (Nominated) – Betty Mitchell Award 2019\,\nBest of Fest (Winner) – Calgary International Fringe Festival 2014. \nThe Yamabiko Taiko Drummers will close out the evening with their high energy performance! Founded in 2003 in Kelowna\, BC\, Yamabiko (meaning ‘Mountain Echo’ in Japanese) Taiko began with very humble and simple desires: purely to enjoy and play Japanese Taiko-style drums and be lost in their power and grace. Starting with homemade instruments made from packing tape and cut-to-size sewer pipes they began to gather in the basement of a member’s house. Today\, Yamabiko Taiko has evolved into a regularly performing group and practices have moved to the basement of the Kelowna Buddhist Temple. \nShuttle Bus – Book a round trip shuttle bus for only $5. Go to our shuttle bus booking page to check the schedule and book your shuttle here. On-line booking for shuttles ends at 12 noon on show day. If you’d like to make a last minute booking\, please call our box office before 4 pm on show day. Last minute booking spaces may not be available. \nIndividual Adult Ticket: $30. \nPLUS: \n\nthe bargain price of $10 for anyone under 30 years old\n2 for 1 for hospital / medical employees for all Performing Arts Trail shows.\nNew attendees 2 for 1: Bring someone who hasn’t been to the theatre before and get 2 for 1 for all Performing Arts Trail shows. New patron must not already be in our database and must join our email list.\n\n60 min Sansei: The Storyteller followed by 30 min Yamabiko Taiko Drummers. Reserved Seating. Intermission. \nDon’t miss the last Performing Arts Trail Series show the Huu-Bac Quinte on Tuesday May 2\, 2023. Montreal based Huu Bac Quach and his quintet skillfully combine his Vietnamese and Chinese heritages with North-American jazz music. His beautiful compositions feature the dan bau (single chord Vietnamese instrument)\, the erhu (Chinese fiddle)\, the quena (Peruvian flute) and the guitar. \nThe Performing Arts Trail series is sponsored by Teck Trail Operations\, Pharmasave Trail and Century 21 Kootenay Homes (2018) Ltd. SUMMARY:Riceboy Sleeps

Only 143 seats available. \n“Riceboy Sleeps” is a compassionate and poetic film about a South Korean single mother determined to provide a better life for her young son in the suburbs of Canada.\nAfter losing her husband\, So-young relocates to Canada in the 1990s with their young son\, Dong-hyun. As Dong-hyun is brutally bullied by his classmates\, his mother battles loneliness\, racism\, and sexism at work causing a rift to grow between mother and son. \nDirector Anthony Shim uses his own experiences growing up in British Columbia in the 1990s as inspiration for the film.
