SUMMARY:Fractal Jazz
DESCRIPTION:TDAC’s Jazz at the Griff Series presents Fractal Jazz Quartet on Thursday\, November 17th\, 2022 @ 7:30 in the Muriel Griffiths Room. \nSingle tickets are $22. Or buy a 6-show Jazz at the Griff Series pass for $107. Passes available only by visiting or calling the box office 250-368-9669. \nThe Jazz at the Griff series\, presented by Trail & District Arts Council\, brings you Fractal Jazz. Enjoy the jazz club vibe of The Griff as you savour a glass of wine in a setting that is up close and personal. \nFractal Jazz is a Kootenay-based instrumental jazz group playing standards\, ballads\, cookin’ bebop tunes and original compositions. With influences spanning multiple jazz styles\, the band guarantees a unique musical experience with every performance. The band includes Daralyn Fox (trumpet)\, Mike Rud (guitar)\, Doug Stephenson (bass)\, and Steven Parish (drums). \nDaralyn Fox is a trumpet player and composer/arranger based out of Rossland\, BC\, fundamentally shaped by experiences at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow\, Idaho during her early years as a musician. It was during this time\, legendary trumpet voices such as Arturo Sandoval\, Freddie Hubbard\, and Clark Terry left a significant impression. She loves high octane big band lead playing and can also be found in smaller groups creating music in the grand tradition of hard and post-bop masters like Clifford Brown\, Charlie Parker and Lee Morgan. Daralyn has studied music performance at MacEwan University in Edmonton AB and St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish NS with a focus on jazz. She has also studied with William (Bill) Dimmer\, Dominic Spera\, and Jon Faddis. In her time as a performing artist\, she has had the pleasure of playing with the incomparable Tommy Banks\, Bobby Cairns and Dominic Spera. \nMike Rud is a Juno award-winning jazz guitarist and songwriter. As an instrumentalist\, Mike has played alongside some of the greatest jazz musicians of the era like Peter Bernstein\, Kenny Wheeler\, Herb Ellis and Joey DeFrancesco. As a songwriter and arranger\, Mike won the 2014 Juno Award for his album “Notes on Montreal”\, a critically acclaimed musical portrait of the city. It was inspired by the great literature set in Montreal (Michel Tremblay\, Gabrielle Roy etc.) and sung by Sienna Dahlen. Mike’s subsequent 2015 solo release\, “Miniatures”\, delighted audiences across Canada\, creating the effect of a small group with only his voice and his guitar. Rud has a master’s degree from McGill and studied privately in New York City with one of the fathers of modern jazz guitar\, Jim Hall. Mike has taught at McGill\, Western Washington\, and Carleton universities\, and speaks frequently at other music schools. He is also a music instructor at Selkirk College in Nelson\, BC. \nDoug Stephenson has been an integral member of Western Canada’s music community for over thirty years. The Calgary native is a guitarist\, bassist\, songwriter\, and producer. He has performed with a wide range of artists including Melody Diachun\, Charlie Rouse\, Bob Murphy\, Les McCann\, Jay Thomas\, John Stowell\, Tommy Banks\, P.J. Perry\, Altered Laws\, Barry Romberg\, Bob Brough\, Campbell Ryga\, and Blues legend Big Miller. \nSteven Parish earned his BA in Audio Engineering from the Berklee College of Music. In addition to studying Drum Set at Berklee\, he also studied jazz drum set privately with Frankie Dunlop (Thelonious Monk\, Lionel Hampton)\, Latin rhythms with Frank Malabe\, and attended master classes presented by the great Buddy Rich. Mentored by the legendary Les Paul at age 17\, Steven’s also played\, engineered and/or programmed tracks for Rock ‘n’ Roll legend Cub Koda\, Ian Hunter\, Joe Bouchard of Blue Öyster Cult and Rap artist Stezo-E. He has played Jazz with Anthony Braxton and Pat LaBarbara\, as well as performance art with the groundbreaking Fluxus. He has performed with Selkirk’s long list of visiting artists including Robben Ford\, John Handy\, Jimmy Haslip\, Max Bennett\, Bob Mintzer\, Frank Gambale\, Mike Stern\, Pat Mastellotto and Oz Noy\, among others. Steven Parish started the Music Program at Selkirk College with Darcy Hepner\, Jeff Link and Paul Landsberg in 1989.Licensed Event. Seats for all Griff performances are general admission.
